Transforming Conflict Through Connection: A Two-Day Workshop with Mathare Social Justice Centre.
CHEK partnered with the Mathare Social Justice Centre for a two-day workshop on JUST listening, Alternatives to Violence, and Conflict Transformation.

At the Center for Hope and Empowerment Kenya (CHEK), we believe that lasting peace begins with how we choose to hear and see one another. Recently, at the request of our community partners at the Mathare Social Justice Centre (MSJC), we facilitated a two-day workshop focused on JUST Listening, Alternatives to Violence (AVP), Restorative Justice, and conflict transformation.
Rather than a passive tour or lecture, this was an active, deeply participatory and experiential space for community members to confront heavy realities and learn practical frameworks for peacebuilding.
The Challenge: Navigating a Landscape of Hardship
Mathare is a vibrant community, but it is also one that has long faced compounding systemic challenges. Residents navigate the daily realities of poverty, substance abuse, interpersonal violence and real and perceived government apathy. Over time, these pressures can erode community trust and breed a widespread sense of hopelessness. In environments where survival is the daily priority, conflict is often met with reactionary violence rather than constructive dialogue.
MSJC recognized the need to equip community members with different tools to process these frustrations and de-escalate tensions before they turn destructive.
CHEKโs Intervention: Listening as an act of justice to your neighbor. Alternatives to Violence modalities and practical avenues of transforming interpersonal and societal conflict. Over the course of two days, CHEK facilitators led participants through an intentional journey of interactive exercises, dialogue and shared reflection.
The core of the workshop was built around the understanding that we cannot transform conflict if we do not first understand ourselves, the people behind it.
Participants explored:
Communication and Affirmation: Breaking the habit of listening merely to reply, and instead learning to listen to understand. Cooperation: How to work together rather than in opposition, in order to accomplish mutual goals
Conflict Transformation: Identifying personal needs and triggers and exploring how to respond to disputes differently.
Building Empathy: Creating a safe space for others to feel heard without judgment, helping to bridge divides across differences and rediscover a shared humanity.

The Outcome: Shifting Perspectives and Habits
The true impact of this workshop doesn’t just live in the two days we spent together; it begins with the shift in how participants will interact with their families, neighbors, and community moving forward.
Participants were encouraged to critically reflect on their own listening habits and their default responses to conflict. By experiencing the power of feeling truly heard, they are now better equipped to offer that same non-judgmental space to others in Mathare. One participant shared that they now felt that there was a reason for them to stay sober and fight for their life against the pervading hopelessness
These conversations serve as a powerful reminder: meaningful, community-wide transformation does not happen overnight. It begins with small, intentional changes in how we relate to one another on a daily basis.
